Number of facilities: 7

Company history: Hummel Group was opened in 1957 as Hummel Insurance Agency by Paul & Mary Hummel in Berlin, Ohio. Paul, a local pastor, began selling insurance out of his home to “supplement his preaching habit.” Our agency was started in Holmes County and wrote predominantly homes, farms and autos. We have expanded to seven locations with 175+ employees. While our capabilities have grown, we strive to maintain the same close personal relationships with our clients and put their interests first.
How has your company changed over the years? Our agency has grown significantly in size and abilities. In the 1950’s, we only represented 2-3 insurance companies. We currently represent most of the top insurance companies in the agribusiness field.
How do you see your company growing in the future? We’re focused on growing through “word of mouth” referrals in our focused lines of grain, feed, seed, agronomy, & energy.
Interesting tidbits about your business: Few people would call insurance “interesting”. However, we enjoy getting to meet, work with, and help the men & women who make up this industry.
How has OABA helped your business or the agribusiness industry? Whether its networking at events, learning more about the industry through classes and workshops, or the opportunity to give back in educational formats, the relationships and knowledge we gain is second to none.
Anything else you would like to share: We’re educators at heart, and we enjoy providing options and empowering businesses to take back control of their insurance programs.
