Urgent Action Needed: Preserve Sales Tax Exemption for Ag Tile & Grain Bins

The Ohio Senate Finance Committee is currently reviewing the state budget bill, House Bill 96. As it currently stands, the proposal would remove the sales tax exemption on the sale and installation of agricultural tile and portable grain bins—a change that would significantly increase operating costs for Ohio farmers and agricultural businesses. We need to have that sales tax exemption restored.  It is urgent that you contact your state senator and tell him or her to KEEP THE SALES TAX EXEMPTION FOR THE SALE AND INSTALLATION OF AGRICULTURAL TILE AND PORTABLE GRAIN BINS!

Why This Matters

  • Cost Burden: Agricultural tile and portable grain bins are essential investments for soil drainage, crop storage, and overall farm efficiency. Eliminating the sales tax exemption would add thousands of dollars in upfront costs for any new tile installation or bin purchase—dollars that come directly out of a family farm’s bottom line.
  • This also applies to ag businesses and their bins.
  • Senator Manchester’s Amendment (SC 136 2930): Senator Manchester has introduced an amendment (SC 136 2930) to restore the current sales tax exemption for agricultural tile and grain bins. If enacted, this amendment would prevent any new sales tax on these critical farm inputs.

What You Can Do Right Now

  1. Contact Your State Senator Today:
    • Ask them to support Senator Manchester’s amendment (SC 136 2930) and ensure that HB 96 continues to exempt agricultural tile and portable grain bins from sales tax.
    • Emphasize how removing this exemption would unfairly penalize Ohio’s farmers and raise costs for local agri-businesses.
  2. Suggested Talking Points for Your Call or Email:
    • “I’m a concerned constituent from [your county/town], and I’m urging you to reinstate the sales tax exemption on agricultural tile and portable grain bins in HB 96.”
    • “Removing this exemption would add an estimated [insert local estimate, e.g., $3,000–$5,000] to the cost of every tile installation and bin purchase—costs that we simply cannot absorb.”
    • “Please support Senator Manchester’s amendment (SC 136 2930) to restore this critical exemption and protect Ohio’s farming communities.”
  3. Find Your Senator’s Contact Information:
    • Visit the Ohio Legislature’s “Find My Senator” page and enter your ZIP code.
    • Call your senator’s district office directly to leave a voicemail message. (A sample script could read: “Hello, my name is [Your Name] from [City/Town]. I’m calling to ask Senator [Name] to vote FOR Senator Manchester’s amendment SC 136 2930 and maintain the sales tax exemption for agricultural tile and portable grain bins in HB 96. Thank you for your time.”)
