The Ozempic Era is Forcing Wellness Retreats for the Elite to Change

Attendees might be weaning off weight-loss drugs or trying to mitigate their side effects

It was 3 p.m., and already Mitra Mechanic had completed a yoga class and a four-hour guided hike. Peeling off her sweat-soaked clothes and devouring a snack — a few pieces of raw vegetables and a meager dollop of hummus — she steeled herself for the next workout on her packed schedule: strength training.

Mechanic, a 55-year-old tech industry worker from Austin, was attending Mountain Trek, a wellness retreat in the mountains of British Columbia that promises to overhaul guests’ health in as little as a week. The cost of that week? $6,900 per person.

On paper, Mechanic was looking for a “reset” after a stressful period. But like many of her fellow attendees, she was also hoping to slim down on the rigorous program. She was prescribed the highest dose of the GLP-1 prescription weight loss medication Mounjaro for her Type-2 diabetes, but she had not experienced the transformative weight loss many people report.
