You don’t need a survey to gauge employee engagement. Sometimes, all you need to do is listen.
If there is one word in the English language that will clue you in on whether your employees are engaged, that word would probably be "we." Why? Because engaged employees don't say "they." Engaged employees say "we."
Employees who say “they” when talking about their organization and coworkers are subconsciously trying to put some emotional distance between themselves and their work. For instance, when asked where they work and what they do, disengaged employees may say something like “I work at Acme Inc. They manufacture household products.” Engaged workers, on the other hand, might enthusiastically say “Oh, I work at Acme Inc., we manufacture high-quality household products.”
